We recently asked our club captain, Steve Roberts, why he thought so many people enjoy indoor bowling so much, here’s what he had to say …
Playing indoor bowls is something we can all truly enjoy. It presents a unique set of challenges that differ from outdoor play. One of the main elements that make indoor bowling so intriguing is the precision required: there is virtually no room for mistakes. Every shot demands accuracy and if you misjudge your aim even slightly, you could end up off the mat. It’s a sport where you need to hit the ground running from the moment you step onto the playing surface.
The structure of the game is particularly interesting. We compete over several ends and during this time, accuracy and consistency become absolutely vital. In doubles matches, there are two key players on each team: the lead bowler and the skip. The lead bowler takes on the initial responsibility of setting the mark, which is crucial for establishing the strategy of the game. Following this, the skip steps in to make tactical decisions and position their bowls effectively.
Communication is an essential part of the game. The players need to discuss how the head is looking, which refers to the collection of bowls that are currently in play, as well as the positions of the opponent’s bowls. Understanding where our competitors stand allows us to strategise our next moves effectively. This cooperation between teammates can often be the difference between winning and losing.
Beyond teamwork, confidence plays a pivotal role in performing well. It’s important to believe that you can execute the challenging shots that could potentially secure points or even decide the match. From a coaching perspective, practising is invaluable. The more time you dedicate to honing your skills, the more instinctive your shot selection becomes during actual games.
Consistency and accuracy should always be the goal. This means spending ample practice time on the mat, whether you are at Etherow IBC or another venue. It’s important to familiarise yourself with different conditions. Each mat has unique characteristics, such as varying speeds and angles, depending on the type of bowls you’re using. Therefore, the more you play and observe how your opponents prepare during the warm-up, the better prepared you will be. Understanding these elements can give you an edge and enhance your overall performance when playing matches.
Lastly, please remember to always enjoy yourselves when bowling and good luck.
